Do an introspection of life
To do good meditation the most important thing at that time is that we get a peace in our mind, for that you need to do regular analysis of your daily activities and lifestyle.
Just arrange your life and make it disciplined.
If possible do that meditation in which you only just listen to the noises of outer world without using your brain and keeping yourself calm.

From my experience with this, it can be hard to motivate the mind to focus. Especially if depressed. Try encouraging your mind with positive thoughts. easier said than done, mind needs food just like the body, it will absorb anything you let it focus on. So be careful what you read, see, especially if your defences are down and feeling sad. Avoid the news. Main thing is to have courage / believe in your self and go forward.
Meditation comes in different forms, so why not cycle through the different types to keep the mind fresh and interested. Writing a mantra often helps when depressed. Mantra does not need to be a foreign language. God understands you more than you know.

Depressed - Think Zinc.
People who are suffering from depression often have zinc deficiency. There are many net articles about it:

Zinc works with B6 and Magnesium
Zinc supplements take about 2 weeks to a month to slowly start working.

I love Uma's response about meditating with others. If you can find a group near you who gather together to meditate, it will keep you doing it. I also struggle to keep up with meditation on my own and the group setting definitely does help.

Ms Hepburn has already rendered the solution.
Yet, as a self-help input, if applicable, engage the depressing thought, identifying the aspect of consciousness which is attached or associated with that emotion. The anticipated outcome, when denied is possibly the root. Who seeks the outcome? Is the outcome in the ephemeral domain or the eternal?
The fear, the depression is not us unless we associate our consciousness with it.
Hope this helps
