I think the problem centers around what we mean by "Christians". I think the use often made of this word is basically 'people who have some loyalty to their church, or who for some reason can be labeled Christian'. Like people who think that they're Christian because of their background ("Irish Catholics"), but aren't necessarily demonstrating the spiritual qualities demonstrated by Christ or other masters of the faith.

In Proverbs, for example, there are many verses that say something like, "The wise prosper, and the foolish don't." But you'll notice it doesn't say, "people who check 'Christian' on the national census". People make their religion more like a tribe than a spiritual pattern. But one tribe isn't better than another. It didn't say, "The Levites prosper, and the Benjamites don't."
