Ark encounter

As many of you know, the organization Answers in Genesis is building a full size replica of Noah’s ark. The ark is almost completed and is scheduled to be open to visitors on July 7. You can learn the details at arkencounter.com.

Most people don’t believe a worldwide flood occurred. In his second letter Peter foretold this denial.
They will say, “Where is the promise of his coming? For ever since the fathers fell asleep, all things are continuing as they were from the beginning of creation.”

For they deliberately overlook this fact, that the heavens existed long ago, and the earth was formed out of water and through water by the word of God, and that by means of these the world that then existed was deluged with water and perished.
2 Peter 3:4-6
The flood lasted just a little over one year, yet during that year the rapid burial of living creatures produced most of the fossils we find today and the geography of the earth was changed.

Knowing whether the flood occurred is essential to accurately measuring the age of the earth. If there was no flood then it would have taken millions of years to form the vast number of fossils that we find and to shape the earth into its present condition. On the other hand, if there was a flood it is possible that the earth is only a few thousand years old, as the Bible says.

Knowing there was a flood not only shows that the earth is younger than most people believe but it also shows that God is concerned about the way we live and will judge us. The rainbow is a sign that God will never send a flood that will destroy all life on earth. The next judgment will be by fire.

The purpose of the ark replica is to provide proof that the story of the flood is true. Here is some more information about the ark and the flood on the Answers in Genesis website.

Jesus and god and floods, oh my. The earth was at one time covered in volcano's, was at one time one continent, was struck by large space rocks, there are many places that were deep under water and are now mountain ranges due to tectonic plate movement. And then there emerged people and they dreamed. They dreamed of things that were convenient to dream, and they bonded together and determined that others should dream of like-mind. They wrote down these dreams and said that god did the writing, and thus the lemmings ran-off to the sea. :)

theophilus, which part of what you posted relates to Science And Spirituality? This is Faith Belief And Religion and belongs in the Christianity forum. A straight-forward info thread on the project would have been somewhat understandable I suppose... the science of designing and building a ship. But then you launch into this End Of Days sermon; where's the science behind that?

Nuclear fire if humanity doesn't grow up.

Hi Baile :)

I figure a little bit of humor, on the part of the poster, in the form of the silly, is a welcome break from the more serious stuff. I'm picturing an Ark that will have to house some 6.5 million land species (with the added complexity of singling out a male and female of each) and then the equally daunting task of the select diets that each would be needing to consume. There are also an estimate of 2.2 million species in the oceans which begs the question; what happened to all the freshwater species once the oceans over-ran the land?

So here sits this hundred mile long, or longer, ark with another, equally long, if not longer, being towed behind it with a massive inventory of related food needs. And how many people were on the Ark in order to coordinate this massive undertaking? This was mostly a family business wasn't it? When the trumpets sounded and the two of each from all over swam the Atlantic, the Pacific, and from all land masses and diverse islands from every corner of the globe arrived at the Ark I suspect it was truly a sight to behold.

But then, this was less than 6000 years ago, around the time of the big bang :) so the animals that were alive back then may have only been a few select species of single celled organisms. So perhaps a 5 gallon bucket of scummy water would have been enough to do the trick? God did make man from clay and eve from his rib so that part was already settled. When the flood receded (where did all that water go?) they may have just pored out the water in a brackish pond and instant evolution took over from there. If I were god and Noah that's what I would have done. :)

QUESTION: What is the minimum amount of time it takes to fossilise something?

ANSWER: Fossils are defined as the remains or traces of organisms that died more than 10,000 years ago, therefore, by definition the minimum time it takes to make a fossil is 10,000 years. But, that is just an arbitrary line in the sand – it means very little in terms of the fossilisation process.

There's no silly versus serious with end of days proselytizing. It's just silly. And it's seriously deceitful, preaching the gospel under the pretense of somehow relating to Science and Spirituality. I learned something recently I never knew. Biblical literalism is a fairly recent phenomena, a New World evangelical thing, whereas European Christians traditionally understood these stories to be the metaphoric fables they are. Either aspects of human consciousness are in fact devolving, or Biblical literalism is the flailing last-gasp expression of a 2000 year-old consciousness mindset approaching its own end of days.

Some related spiritual-scientific intuitive (non-literal) reflections: Why is there another ark in the Bible, also made of wood, also with its own precise set of construction instructions (X cubits by Y cubits)? And why did Moses, who received his ark-building instructions from God, stay 40 days on the mountain, the same length of time the rain in Noah's story lasted, and also the length of time Jesus spent in the wilderness? (And BTW what is the occult term "on the mountain" actually referencing, and why did the boat ark end its journey resting on a mountain?) Also, this other ark was carried about for 40 years (there's that number again), at a distance of 2000 cubits from the nearest bystander (more precision measurement instructions). Which happens to be around the same length of time as an astrological and consciousness Age. Interesting to contemplate.

I'm wondering how civilizations in India and China were completely unscathed by this "world wide flood" or how just a mere 100 years after this flood that there were enough people generated to build the Great Pyramids. Among many other extremely odd "facts" concerning this flood story...not to mention the biblical story is a watered down version of much older Assyrian tale, the ancient records of which actually exist.

The bible's creation story doesn't even hint that the sun is a star, that many stars we see are actually galaxies or mention planets...and that we live on one. Scientists study these things out of passion for learning about their wonders, and are not 'tools of Satan', as some Christian fundamentalists would love to have you believe.

That having been said, Theophilus, I agree with Baile, this is a religious topic, has nothing to do with spirituality (or even science) and belongs it in the Religions and Faith section under Christianity. I would never go into the Christianity section and try to dissuade those folks from their beliefs. Please be polite and act accordingly. Remember, "do unto others as you would have them do unto you"...that means, have some respect. You're not doing that with posting this here, and many, including myself, don't appreciate it. Not trying to be mean, just respectful and reasonable.

Scientists have come to the conclusion that the earth is millions of years old because they don't believe the flood occurred and that it would take millions of years for the fossils to form. If there was a flood this fossilization would have taken place in a short period of time. And belief in a flood is not limited to Christianity; there are peoples in all parts of the world that have legends of a flood.
