Prayer Flute
I got to play a very special instrument up in Vermont last week... a "prayer flute"... they are very easy to play, and I was able to get some beautiful melodies out of the ones I tried. I was particularly drawn to one mahogany flute, that just seemed to speak for me, like it was an extension of my breath. Almost bought it, but didn't have the money. Was so beautiful! The man said it was a traditional Native American instrument. I would have even just spent the money anyway, except, the range of the instrument is quite small. One octave-- at best you can get an octave plus one more note. That is just too limiting for me. As a violinist, I'm used to expressing my musicality across several octaves, and using a wide range. ....otherwise the tone of these flutes were amazing. Like I said, I'd never played before, but the music I was making on my first try was just gorgeous! To no credit of my own. He is just an amazing craftsman.
Any good Native American instrument stories?
