I have heard that the Islamic reaction to this book was a bit over the top. The content is not as controversial as all that. Islam tends to take itself too seriously.

I've read Midnight's Children, which most people think is superior. It was even made into a movie recently. I never got the furore about Satanic Verses, pretty pointless to get so worked up about it, if you ask me, but that's what happens when literal-minded idiots take up religion.
