West Nile Déjà vu

An article in the today's newspaper says a Colorado resident has West Nile. The first case in Colorado this year. He has the rare form of West Nile called West Nile Neuroinvasive. Back when I got this form of West Nile it was called West Nile Meningitis. Now they have a fancy name for it

99% of people who get West Nile have mild flu-like symptoms
1% get the West Nile Neuroinvasive type.

West Nile is carried by the Culex mosquito.

It can cause neurological damage, brain damage, paralysis, and lead to other diseases due to a compromised immune system. Everyone is different.

Not to mention while going through the initial virus, you can't believe the pain that can last a few weeks. I've never experienced anything like it before.

Please, please use repellent if you are going to be outside where mosquitoes lurk. This disease is way worse than the media reports if you get the Neuroinvasive type.

With our monsoon rains we have been having the last month mosquitoes are everywhere.

Here is a map where cases have been reported. Colorado isn't colored but it's just because the map hasn't been updated yet.

I got what the doc's all said was west nile virus while traveling through Honduras about 12 years ago....(My wife told me to stay out of that damn swamp! But nooo....I didn't listen)

All the symptoms of the flu...minus respiratory symptoms.

Fever..... body aches...night sweats......

West Nile virus after that was on the list (a long list!) Of shots I get prior to going out of the country to the third world places I like to do adventure treks in

When the new vaccine for zika virus finally comes out....that one will get added to the list too!

Yes, Lucky you can get West Nile again so it's wise to get the shot. I wasn't aware there was a West Nile vaccine.

You got the good kind of West Nile. What 99% of the population get.

Mine turned into West Nile Meningitis. I was sick for 6 months and suffered brain damage and many complications that I will have for the rest of my life.

I wanted to also mention When you have West Nile you will test positive for West Nile for the rest of your life. And I cannot donate blood because it will show up.

Thought of another thing. With West Nile I have had several relapses. The virus is alive and active in my system. When my body gets depleted I can still relapse and have another bout of illness.

It's very frustrating. The first two years after I got WN I relapsed two times. So far, no further relapses. But I've learned if I do relapse I do not pass Go or Collect my $200. I go straight to bed and stay there for a few weeks so I don't get sicker.

So far West Nile has tested positive in the counties of Adams, Boulder, Larimer and Weld, Colorado this year. Scary stuff.
