The time dilation aspect is interesting, as they state that such a situation might actually be very quick or instantaneous from the point of the event itself, but to observers outside, may appear to take place only after trillions of years.

A quarter of a Billion years, ago. - Near extinction on the planet.
Also, A Cosmic, or Galactic Rotation "Year" of the Milky Way Galaxy.
The time it takes to make one rotation.

Seems that the Mayans had knowledge of the so called “precession of the equinoxes” and they could foresee this unusual position of our solar system. It appeared to them to be of such profound significance that they chose it as the end of their calendar cycle.
