The southern states of the US rebelled against the northern, creating the Confederate States. Leading immediately to the civil war of 1860-1861. There were multiple reasons for this, not all politically acceptable today, but there is not one southerner today who'd find the word 'rebel' negative. There were Native Indian tribes and individuals fighting on both sides, and courageously so. The last general to give in on the southern side was a Native Indian, for one thing.

I agree with WhiteWarrior that "renegade" is not necessarily a bad name. A renegade can be one who chooses his own path, foregoing the "normal" or "expected" path.

Let's say one was raised a conservative Christian. If one then chooses to live a life according to Native American beliefs, one would be a "renegade", and perhaps, a "deserter" of the path others had expected of one to follow. Many times a "renegade" is merely a courageous person who makes his own choices.
