A friend, (wealthy) Margaret, met Marilyn when she was around 9 yrs old, (Margaret isn't an attractive woman, btw).
Marilyn bent down, took her chin in her hand and said, "What pretty little girl you are..." 
(At a neighborhood party on LI, NY, cuz Arthur Miller stayed out there in '57.)
I just love telling that story. Marilyn's gentleness and kindness was profound.
