Saying "affirmations doesn't work" is like saying "catharsis doesn't work". Actually both work. In psychology, we see sometimes a debate, and even a conflict, between cognitive approaches, and psychoanalysis. (bad) cognitivists say "analysis doesn't work", to wich (bad) analysts reply "cognitivism doesn't work". Actually, not only both work, but they work even better combined. Combined doesn't mean mixed, though.

Same in spirituality, and holistic approaches. If we see the practices in two, there is mostly magic and mysticism. Both work very strongly, Especially if combined in a balanced way. Going even further you see that they both actually include the other part as well, while still keeping it separate. Think about it as in the symbol of the Tao. There is the Yin, the Yang, the Yin of Yang, and the Yang of Yin. All 4 are at the same time combined, and separate.

That's the most powerful approach.
