I think that what you are referring to has something to do with the more differentiated or less differentiated aspects of these 'identities'.

As these identities manifest on descending planes they are essentially the same
but take on attributes that are native to those planes - differentiation being one.

For instance, Atman is undifferentiated, jivatman is essentially the same but differentiated.

The same applies to levels of purusha.

I would recommend Sri Aurobindo's, "The Life Divine", and in particular his descriptions regarding Over-mind vs Super-mind.
