Over time, people tried various paths in their quests for the Truth. One problem is when they concentrate too much on the path, and miss the signs that they have to adjust that path. Consequently they don't converge toward the Truth. They build models, but try to massage what they observe into their models more than adapt their models to what they observe.

You need good judgment, and you have to continuously strive to better yours. You need emotions, but you must learn to control them.
I believe that the methods that concentrate on your body (energetic, sexual, abstinence, etc.) make sense only when they intend to use that as a launchpad to dissociating your conscience from the physical body.
