Assisted suicide is legal in 5 states in the US; the person has to be able to take the doctor prescribed pills on their own volition ...
I believe this is considered a common law ...
In other states where it is illegal, assisted suicide is punishable when another person participates in the suicide ...
Examples are providing substances to complete suicide &/or place them in the person's mouth ...
These can be tried in court of law as a "mercy killing" or "murder" ...
Two completely different definitions of assisted suicide ...

If you believe in karma, this is how justice is served for a victimless crime ...
However, if someone gambles away their family's money & belongings knowing full well there are odds in winning, their spouse could deliver consequences w/divorce & sue to regain the losses made by the other spoke regardless of the amount of time to make full restitution ...
Is it immoral to gamble away money or stupidity?
