I think something like a Dementor already existed, and Rowling just gave it the name and appearance, and action in a plot of her book. Philip Pullman called them Spectres in
The Subtle Knife, and Terry Pratchett called them Dromes in
The Wee Free Men.
At least Rowling could be positive about it by creating the Patronus charm and chocolate remedies, which might even work. The way spectres and dromes are written... you just go insane and catatonic and die, and you don't even see them coming.
It just occurred to me that talk like this is NOT helping MM86 at all, so I'll go start up a separate thread about this
