It would have me shaken up too! I do know aggressive men that do not act the same towards women.
I had a neighbor like yours for a very long time and I avoided him as much as I could, including not BBQ'ing when he was around so I would not invoke his wrath.
You are no way responsible for his outcome, if anything, may be you subconsciously knew his attitude was putting himself in danger.
