I do not claim to have an answer here, however I think it is just a matter of interpretation.
Your wish to look for elders, I suppose it is your search for a teacher, someone who can guide you on your path, who can transmit you their wisdom.
What the message says here, to look for the leader inside of you is exactly that, to follow your heart, I'm sure your wish to go to these elders comes from within yourself and not by following someones instructions, so yeah, that's it, look for the leader inside and follow it.
I interpret this as a way of trying to free myself from all those who seem to be leaders. Buddha himself said do not believe what others tell you is true until you have expirienced it by yourself. It works quite well for me.

Take what resonates and leave the rest.
