Even if some of the words in Matthew are his explanation rather than the actual words of Jesus they are still part of the scripture. If we believe that the scriptures are inspired by God we must accept them as true.
There are other places where this kind of uncertainty exists. I have heard some claim that John 3:16-21 is John's comment on what Jesus said rather than the actual words of Jesus. In my opinion it doesn't matter whether this is the case or not. This passage is part of the inspired word of God whether spoken by Jesus or added by John when he was writing his gospel.
