The purpose behind choosing which texts appeared in the Bible was to strengthen the power of the priesthood in the early Christian church. Therefore it was taught that people had one lifetime followed by Heaven or Hell, and if people wanted to end up in Heaven they were dependent on the Church for their salvation.
The doctrine of reincarnation would have reduced the power of the Church and the priesthood, because it removes the ideas of eternity in Heaven or Hell and it also removes the need for the Church.
The New Testament cannot be considered an accurate reflection of the life and teachings of Jesus, because it was put together long after the death of Christ by ordinary humans following a particular agenda.
