It can be both. Usually the biggest hurdle people encounter is identifying that there is a guide. It can be helpful to then connect with them, to get some more direct guidance. In my case, I find it often ends up where they tell me what they're here to help with (ie, enforcing my boundaries), and being able to see and hear them helps me stay connected, which in turn helps them help me better. That said, if you're having trouble focusing on them, keep trying. They'll find ways to get through to you.
