I'm wondering, a bit perplexed... does it matter how to interpret the quote?
You and your ex aren't together anymore, you decide she's in a Karmic relationship, which I can understand as that feels better to think and say.
You have a new gf, yet you still are thinking about your ex wife and hoping to get back together?
Does your new partner know about this? How does she feel about this?
Let go of all this, get over the breakup, heal your ego.
I also wonder what your former friend's account of this story would be. I'm getting an intuitive sense yours it not exactly what went down.
Not my problem, but getting a realistic perspective can help to heal and move on.
