The soul leaves the physical body behind and we enter the astral realm. Some people go straight to the "afterlife", others stay close to the physical realm. In my experience as a clairvoyant/medium, people typically stick around for the first year or so and then move on after that. There is a lot of processing taking place at this time--they are making peace with their lifetime, letting go of emotional attachments, making sense out of their death, figuring out what their purpose was and if they believe they fulfilled it, releasing any painful emotions they are holding onto. For some this takes longer than others depending on their life circumstances and how/when they died. Some decide to wait until someone they are attached to who is still in the physical dies, too, before they will pass on. Obviously this person is typically their life partner.

Once they pass on, they enter whatever part of the astral realm feels right to them. Usually it's what they believe the afterlife will look like. There is a gigantic heaven-like place there that people consider to be "heaven", there are lots and lots of souls there. It's exactly how people imagine and describe it to be. If you believe in heaven and believe you belong there then, more than likely, that's where you'll end up. However, this is not "the end" as many people believe. There is no end, actually. A soul can choose to stay there as long as they want, they can reincarnate into a new body if they want to or simply enjoy the afterlife. Many souls find it to be boring after awhile, especially if they stay in one place. The astral realm is a very huge place, our minds cannot grasp how vast it is. There are many different realms within this gigantic realm (an infinite number) because they are all basically thought forms. Each realm is a product of someone's imagination, sometimes reinforced by many different people's imaginations (like in the case of heaven). The more intention and emotion put into it the more attractive the realm is to souls of like-energy (i.e. those who have a similar intention and emotional state). The darker realms have many, many souls and entities there, too, and there is not just one "hell" (although there is a gigantic one), there are many smaller ones as well. Souls can switch between realms at will and learn quite a bit by exploring and interacting with different souls/entities. It is very easy and simple to travel in the astral realm--all you need to do is think about where you want to go or who you want to see and in an instant you will be there.
