Some of the lower spiritual energies within the sub-human world can use such devices as a 'Ouija board' (and a PSB-7 Spirit Box) to gain a foothold in the mind of a superstitious and impressionable person, then feed off the ongoing fear this engenders (it's like Viagra for them). I see them as nothing but spoilt 'spirit children' or unevolved souls just trying to get my attention due to the fact I am also trying to ignore them. Eventually, this may backfire and I honestly hope it does, so that I will learn a very important lesson about what I'm actually dealing with, but so far, this hasn't eventuated.
I would class myself as being 'pretty serious' about all forms of ITC (Instrumental Trans Communication) techniques, and I'd loosely categorise 'Ouija Boards' and 'Divination' within it (but I'd much prefer the Ovilus)...call me a 'Digital Dowser' and that would be pretty close to describing what I am.
Anyway, the only way to remain protected is to appeal to your belief system to do so - I appeal to 'the Laws of Physics (and Meta-Physics)'. Some appeal to their Spirit Guides and Angels, while others appeal to Satan himself to keep his annoying 'minions' away. The whole importance is in the intent behind it. If it's just going to be a 'game' for you, the spirits will treat it as a 'game' for them too and not all humans are very comfortable with the way spirits like to muck around and play their 'games'. If you go into it with an open heart and mind and without any spiritual prejudice, there's less of a chance that a 'demon' can find its way through, especially with one like me, who would just say to the 'demon', "I'm not concerned with talking to you, either take me to your leader, or get lost'...as a result, I've never been able to get them 'move anything' for me either and they all tell me they just cannot do it - no matter how many times I get them to try and blow out a candle, or roll a ball across a table....but they will light my mel-meter up on command, which means they have energy, but not enough to make any impact on matter, just other forms of energy (and they haven't given me any equation yet which shows the contrary). I was thinking of getting an 'EM Pump' to juice them all up a bit, until I realised I'd probably get false positives on my K2 after that. *sigh*
I need a good, old-fashioned ghost hunt.
