With back pain the treatment depends on the cause, if it's from an old injury it could be nerve damage, if it's from posture(including the way he sleeps) it's a little easier to treat. I have problems with my lower back and it helps to sleep somewhere new, a couch instead of a bed, even laying on the floor can help, though it can be painful lying perfectly flat at first.
