It is my understanding that the astral realm is not a place in the physical reality, but it emulates it with great realism. Because of that, most of the time people won't realize they are dreaming.

These are good possibilities, however, since an astral traveler can go back and forth in time, I'm more inclined to believe that the astral plane is a place that exists on it's own and does not depend on the physical plane. It has it's own workings, rules and mechanisms that many times contradict the physical experience. For example, muscles don't matter, gravity can be ignored and great distances can be covered with a single step.
