I know sugar is detrimental to overall health and we only need roughly 25g (or possibly less) every single day, but we know fruits are healthy because of the vitamins and minerals they contain.

I want to start eating a ton of dates so I can gain weight, but one date is 16g of sugar which is about all you really need for one day.

Right now I feel that no matter how much sugar I take in it won't really be all that detrimental to me, so long as I take it in from fruits, however I want to know your perspective at this time.

If you don't have any health issues like dodgy blood sugar management etc, or any other health problem which means you have to watch your diet, then I would say eating fruit is fine. Maybe just two or three decent servings of fruit per day. I wouldn't worry too much about the sugar content of fruit as this is not as unhealthy as people think....so long as you don't overdo it, obviously. The only caveat is -never brush your teeth straight after eating fruit, as this damages your teeth!
You need a balanced diet, that means balanced amounts of most heathy foods.
I doubt you'd see significant weight gain from eating fruit.
You'll need healthy carbs and proteins to gain weight, and healthy fats also, such as avocados etc. And eat four meals a day if you can. Try to rest after you've eaten, and make sure you get proper sleep.
Don't shun carbs like potatoes and pasta, and rice etc because they are okay, if eaten as part of a healthy balanced diet. Quinoa is good because it contains both carbs and protein. Sweet corn is good too.

Fatty protein foods like peanut butter and Tahini are good. Why not experiment with making your own Tahini/chocolate ice cream? Wow!
