When we are young, one is normally influenced by and under the power of others. Maturity, however, is many things, one of which is taking responsibility for our self.
At some point, we realize we have a choice, and we make it. At that point, we grow up. If we feel wronged, we forgive. If we have painful memories, we let go of the pain. If we feel shame, we resolve to learn and grow from the shame. We become mature, self-responsible adults, blaming nobody else, making our own way, taking both the blame and the praise alike for what we do, for what we feel, for who we are.
You can't help anybody else if you can't help yourself. This, for me, has been the road to peace.
