I would feel the same way, I feel bad for the worms when it rains and they crawl out onto the sidewalk and dry up when the rain stops. If I see them I take them and put them back in the dirt before they dry up.
I did want to say though, you said that you put them back in your "garden." If you're talking about the slugs I'm thinking of and you're referring to a garden that you grow vegetables in, slugs will eat everything in sight.
I was just thinking that perhaps you may want to return them back to the brush where they came from?
