That's just a thought, I am not qualified or studied in the old or new testaments at all,

I once attended CCD many years ago, don't recal what it stands for anymore, however. I attended a Catholic school for three years, and during that time I wanted to become a Priest. That, I guess, was a phase that didn't last long.
Back to your comment, I do know that from the sermons I've been to that there is usually a part where the Priest takes a passage and then puts their spin on it. I would imagine that all priests add their take. After all if you can't relate to it you're more than likely not going to keep reading it.
Then you get the other group of people that do it out of fear, and have become so habitual they don't even know what it means anymore.
A few years back at Ash Wednesday I would ask those with their Ashes what they stood for, and they could not even tell me. They would tell me that it was habit.
