Crystals can be portals, large single ones are better. Most are not particularly good for 'travel' mostly because they are too small but also they tend to filter stuff coming through. Clear ones with large flat facets are particularly good to look through (any kind of remote sensing). Various sorts of crystals are also used as information portal/access points.
More typically crystals in a portal application are as energetic terminals. This can be as one end of an energy link (to send or receive energy). The more important use as a terminal is that they are easy to locate energetically at a 'distance' (especially between dimensions). This combination makes them especially good to keep in constant contact with a person (typically a pendant worn around the neck).
