When you want to ap your mind should be relaxed. It cannot have negative thoughts. When it is negative it can make it a lot more difficult to ap. The ap books say if you cannot put aside your issues then you need to give ap a break. I was listening to a CD a long time ago and it said, imagine a steel box and put all your negative thoughts into that then lock it up. That was to make your mind calm and free of worries. I forget the wording but it was something like that.
