Hello Melanie
I am currently studying a VTCT massage course and from what I have gathered, there are a few reasons to get massage. You might be physically sore, tight/tense or have some type of physical ailment and massage can relieve those things in a physical way.
There are also benefits that can be had emotionally or to inner well being, through being closer to another person than you may usually be and being given permission to do nothing. This can help you feel more relaxed which in turn may help you to function on a physical level.
Sometimes it may be easier for people to have a 'specialised' person for this as it cuts out a lot of complication that people can sometimes get in regular relationships.
Most massage therapists are good at putting people at ease and should also have quite a wide range of formal training behind them to ensure they do the job.
If the first visit to a massage therapist is not completely effective, it is worth doing again as it may take time to familiarise with the therapist and with trying something new.
