my guess is that your past trauma triggered the nightmares, and that
you'd developed the means to block out recognition of your dreams so
as to stop the reverberations of your trauma echoing in those nightmares.
through trusting that your dreams will be a means of assisting your
development, and not a source of distress, you might enable yourself
to relax your self-imposed restrictions of dream recall.
one technique you might employ for remembering dreams would be to
remain in bed for an extended period after awakening... probably at
least a half hour or so. just relax and allow your mind to revisit the
ideas you'd experienced recently, and replay the scenes for you.
