I remember several times when I was having nightmares and then suddenly the cat would jump up on the bed and wake me up. This has happened to me with different cats throughout my life, even ones that weren't mine. I think somehow cats are more tuned into our emotions. They see when were in distress and if they like us, they want to help. Even for those that don't believe in psychic energy, it makes sense. If you watch lions, and other social cats, they are highly protective of their prides. If a cat perceives us as members of their pride, or part of their territory they will do what they can protect us.
