Grounding for me seems to be essentially pulling energy back in. My energy has a tendency to rise and spread out, leaving me to have my "head in the clouds" so to speak. Usually I operate on a lower physical sensitivity and a bit of numbness. When I'm grounded, I feel more as if I'm in my body and part of the physical world, able to hear and see and feel more clearly. It lets me connect better to the energies and people around me, as well as my body.
So in my definition, grounding is essentially connecting to the physical realm more than the astral/spiritual one. It does seem to have a resonance with trees and earth - the denser, more wild forms - and I too have seen the grounding process like that. When I would see my roots grounding me, they visualized as going deep into the Earth to wrap around the core, binding me to its energy. So perhaps grounding is simply the process of vibrating close to that of Earth's dense frequency.
