Killing the ego? No...undoing the ego's thought system...(the carnal or worldly thought system),
not following it,
but choosing the Holy Spirit's Thought System (or your Higher Self or godly thought system if you will...
whatever name, who cares.)
It's an issue with wordage.
Like feeding the bad wolf or the good wolf,
or listening to the devil on your shoulder or the angel.
Then, you can get into the lower ego self and the higher ego self...the whole thing is a mess of words! 
So what, splitting hairs.
