Whenever I read that God or Jesus will punish and send people to Hell, I mentally drop out because it so contradicts the message of love.

You cannot spread the message of love and at the same time threaten punishment and Hell which produces fear.
To produce fear in people is what I consider evil; it is the tool of dictators, it is the tool used to control people and make them submissive. And it works on precisely those people who should be protected.
