"A Poem for Samhain"

Multicolored leaves
Littering the ground
A loss of color, light
In the snowy winter, even sound

Under the ice
The leaves softly decay
With its melting come
A light green spring

But for now the trees
Feel they've grown old
Their trunks creak in the wind
Under the weight of the year

The groundhogs are sleeping
Dreaming, perchance
Of the birds that fly south
How it feels to ride gusts of air

The fox has retreated
Into its den
To nurture the young
Whose strength soon begins

I will be cold soon
And stable, and sharp
Like ice

Till spring comes, and I flow freely
Down, down, down the little river
Into new life.
