Well let him talk to a biologist. Death of the body isn't even permanent its recycled into other life. A buried human will over time become the food of worms, beetle, fungus, micro organisms, grubs and feed tree roots and many other things. That buried body will in turn grow many other bodies.
Now as far as consciousness goes, these body's we run around in are just vehicles for us. We leave them every night and travel in the astral body, whether we remember it or not. Think of your body as a flesh hotel borrowed from Mother Earth and destined to return to her. Your consciousness will have many forms and many bodies over the fullness of time.
Or you can believe your doctor. Most of them think they are gods and many of us allow ourselves to hand our brains and bodies over to them like they are gods. *Smirk*
