You have beliefs in Buddha's teachings when you try them out yourself and realize that they work, then they become your beliefs.... Buddhism does not require blind faith.
Buddha kept a lot of his old beliefs ' Ancient Vedic ' but the ones that didn't work for him he dropped and found his new system.... that is why Hindus and Buddhist have some beliefs that are the same. It wasn't just throw out the old and bring in the new.
