Sri Adichunchanagiri Mahasamsthana Math is situated on a rocky hill at an altitude of about 3,300 ft. above M.s.l. 110 km west of Bangalore, the capital of Karnataka, India and 6 km from Bangalore-Mangalore National Highway 48. The approach to the hill is from the west and the pilgrim who looks up the hill while visiting, it finds the hill itself to be in the form of Athmalingam found in the Gokarna Kshetra. At the time of moon-rise the hill appears like the moon crested Shiva, i.e., Chandramouleswara. This abode of green woods and small lakes enlivened by wild peacocks and birds has been attracting sages and rishis since ancient times.

Kala Bhairava temples can also be found around Shakti Peethas. It is said that Shiva allocated the job of guarding each of the 52 Shakti Peethas to one Bhairava. There are said to be 52 forms of Bhairava, which are considered a manifestation of Shiva himself. Traditionally, Kal Bhairav is the Grama devata in the rural villages of Karnataka, Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu, where he is referred to as
"Bhaivara/Annadhani" Vairavar. In Karnataka, Lord Bhairava is the supreme God for the community and commonly referred to as "Gowdas." In the Gangadikara Gowda caste especially, he is considered the caretaker and punisher. Shri Kala Bhairava Nath Swami Temple of Madhya Pradesh is also popular.
In south karnataka lord Sri Kalabhairaveshwara is present as Kshetra Palaka in Sri Adichunchanagiri place.
