Some people see visions/ apparitions without having to Astral Project.
Causes can be various. Praying, meditating, fasting, extreme physical exertion, chemical substance use, mental illness.
I personally would think Virgin Mary was and is known in a symbolic way.
I would even assume the whole story has allegorical explanation, not a literal one.
But who knows, even if it would make less sense to take it literally, it could be a possibility that he Astral Projected.
