I have pre-life memories of having worked as a Psychopomp (I prefer the simpler term Spirit Guide) helping souls both enter and leave the afterlife, and in most cases "real souls of cherished kin" hang around and watch, but don't get involved because they don't have the skilled. The actual situation is similar to paramedics working on a sick or injured person here on the Earth Plane -- relatives and friends who were helping back off when the professionals arrive.
