I've read several translations of surah 5:33 and I believe that I do have an understanding of it.
To get back to the original post, you have pointed out that the content of the hadiths that reference cutting off of hands/feet, crucifixions, and so on do have a basis in the Koran and, in that sense, they are "authentic". I've just never read a biography of the Prophet where those aspects of his life/practices were highlighted or even mentioned.
Needless to say, it has changed my understanding of The Prophet as this is a side of him that I had not seen before and that is why I initially questioned the authenticity of the hadiths.
