[quote=perceval]Casablanca. The movie is nearly perfect. Ladies, if you want to understand guys, watch Casablanca.

As Roger Ebert said, it actually gets better with repeated viewings. The first time, you're following the story, watching it unfold.

The second time, you know the story, you know the relationships of the five main characters (Rick, Ilsa, Victor, Louis, & Sam), what they mean to each other. With that knowledge, this time all the scenes between them take on a different context. You know what each character is thinking, what secrets they are keeping, why they react to little things the way they do. It changes the entire film from the first time you saw it.

Then, with later viewings, you pay attention to the background characters, all of whom have their own story being quietly told. One of the most famous scenes in the film, the La Marseillaise sequence, has a fantastic shot of one of the characters. When you're paying attention to the background characters, you see what her story is, everything that has led her to that moment. Then, this one shot you've noticed from earlier viewings but gave no second thought to really hits, emotionally.

The ending is the only one that could possibly work. Everything in the narrative leads inevitably to it. Yet, they didn't know how they were going to end the film until the day they shot that scene.

Also, when the film was released, the outcome of the war was by no means certain. So the "This time, I know we'll win" line regarding liberating Europe was something hopeful.[/
