I don't wish to debate this, I just wanted to point out that I'm a former Catholic and I've seen the exact same symbol used on the endpapers of a catechism before. And it is the same symbol. Exactly the same.
The Catholic explanation is that it was originally representative of the eye of God; the other explanation is that the Masons are so brave and full of hubris that they will flaunt their secret influence even in the same organisations where they vigorously condemn themselves.
Take your pick. I'm neither a Catholic nor a Mason so I don't particularly care.
