The Self, our Being, is awareness. - Sri Muruganar
Prajñanam brahma - Brahman is pure consciousness (Aitareya Upanishad 3.3 of the Rig Veda)
The Self is but awareness or pure consciousness, and pure consciousness is the fundamental substratum upon which this play of matter, energy, space, time and causation arises and returns back again.
Remembrance of the Self at all times ensures that this play is played as a joyful game, while forgetfulness of the Self ensures that this same play becomes a torturous experience through suffering and misery.
But this suffering and misery also has an objective in that it helps one to properly discriminate between the temporary and eternal and hold on to the latter.
Purpose of suffering is to connect you to your Self (Awareness). It indicates that you got carried away by all the transient things around you. - Sri Sri Ravi Shankar
