Glossary of Buddhism. Vijñāna (Sanskrit) or viññāṇa (Pāli) is translated as "consciousness," "
life force," "mind," or "discernment."
Life force = consciousness = soul for some comfortable with those 4 letters.
The Dalai Lama said the embryo does not become life until the consciousness enters it, so he was saying consciousness = life force as well.
