In the case of zombies it's not just about ourselves but civilization itself. They are doom in every possible way. Vampires are so different, and often presented as sort of classy and sophisticated, and retain self awareness so they are less scary overall. I bet a lot of people would go vampire if the option was available. And they still need people around so they do have a sense of keeping things sustainable, lol..
