The people were doing what people like to do and that was complaining instead of praising Yahweh for all he had done for them. This specific time, the people were complaining because there was no water.
Moses used his rod (magic stick) as Yahweh had commanded and brought forth water. While doing this, Moses and Aaron both forgot to praise Yahweh for this miracle. Because of this, Yahweh told them that because they did not have faith and sanctify him, Yahweh would not allow them to enter the promised land.
