The 'recognition' of tulkus has many doubtful aspects to it. Also, the monks who supposedly discover an important tulku can squabble with others who say they've found another child themselves who's the same tulku ! This results in internal lineage politics and intrigues, as in the Karmapa controversy.
There's a lot of romantic/ fanciful additions to scenic films which don't necessarily portray the truth with great accuracy.
